VAUXHALL VICTOR AND BEDFORD OWNERS CLUB
Third in our series of VBOA profile articles . . . .

Welcome to our club ! It was formed originally in 1980 by the coming together of a few enthusiasts in the South East of England. Its aims remain the same as at the start, i.e. to promote the interest in the Vauxhall Victor model which was introduced in its original form, the Model F, in February 1957. This makes our club one of the longest established Vauxhall classic car clubs and the fact that twenty odd years after its introduction very few examples of the 380,000 F Types produced between 1957 and 1961 was no doubt a significant factor in the desire to preserve its memory and those examples that were left.

The 57 Victor was an absolute sensation when originally introduced.  The British public had seen nothing like it before. It looked like a small American car with its panoramic windscreen, rear wing fins and copious use of chrome and stainless steel.  Besides its ultra modern appearance it was light in weight, comfortable to ride in, eminently drivable, had good performance, and was economical on petrol.  Against its competition, such as Austin’s Cambridge, Morris’ Oxford, Hillman’s Minx, it was streets ahead. Only Ford’s Consul was a serious rival. Ford’s real rival, the Cortina, didn’t come until 1962 but the Victor name lived for 22 years through 5 body styles until 1978, which was longer than the corresponding Cortina range which ran for 20 years to 1982.

The Victor was the foundation of the so-called rep’s car, giving rise to the Cavalier and Vectra and the battle for supremacy in this sector is fought out daily on the motorways of the country between the Vectra and the Mondeo.

Back to our club. Over the years, we have expanded our interest to include the FB and FC models of Victor and in 1993 we welcomed Bedford owners via the association with the CA series of commercial vehicles.

Bedford CA Van - principally used as work vans, camper vans and ice cream vans

All Bedford vehicles are welcome in the club. We have won several awards for our club for its editorship and magazine quality and it was our club which originated the All Vauxhall Rally at Billing Aquadrome.

Though now run by the Vauxhall Bedford Opel Association, it has now become the largest one-make classic car rally in Europe, with well over 2,000 vehicles regularly attending.

We are currently developing our club further and have set up our web site at www.brmmbrmm.com/victor where you can find news of our events, members cars, parts suppliers, and advertisements etc.

In addition, we are improving our organisation and are firmly committed to the preservation of these fabulous cars.

We’re particularly looking forward to Vauxhall’s centenary year 2003 and playing our part in the celebration of that event.

If you have a Victor or Bedford vehicle and would like further details, please get in touch with our Membership Secretary, Derek Wright, on 01267 281074.
