Bangers for (less) cash!

Who said a grand couldn’t buy you an automotive gem?

According to used car database, Cardata.co.uk, the classifieds are awash with genuine bargains from cult classics to popular run-arounds – all for less than £1,000.

If you’re looking for something a little different, how about a 1985 Citroen 2CV special edition saloon, or a 1967 Hillman Super Minx with only 87,000 miles on the clock – both for £999. Cardata also uncovered a 1974 MGB GT and even a 1970 ex-police Morris Minor 1100, with just 60,000 miles on the clock, for £295.

Car buyers in the market for something more conventional - and powerful - will find thousands of bargains including a 1995 2.5 litre V6 Mazda MX-6, and a similarly powered 1998 Vauxhall Vectra special edition with 88,000 miles for just £1,000.

Exceptional models aside, the most common privately advertised bargains come from the Ford and Vauxhall stables, according to Cardata research. Together the ‘big’ two manufacturers account for 70% of all £1,000 or less cars.

Unsurprisingly, the Ford Fiesta tops the charts to retain its title of the perfect run around for first time drivers. Joining the mass-market motors are a brace of executive models - the BMW 520 and Mercedes Benz 190.
